Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom

Have you ever come across the following challenge? You have to name something; your own project, own product, company, your boat or even your own child. Coming up with the right name is very important since this is something you have worked on for a long time. So the name has to reflect your inspiration and effort. You used your own blood sweat and tears creating this. Spend many long lonely nights to finalize (just forget the child metaphor here). And now you are ready to launch it. But waitโ€ฆ.. it has no name. Best way to name something is to find an example in nature. And animals are powerful and good inspirations for names. Here are a large number programming languages, software, and tools who are named after an animal grouped together in my zoo of programming languages. And there are probably many more. Feel free to help me and add yours as comments on this article.

Impala

This is one of the major tools for querying a big data database. Impala is a tool for querying big data. Impala is a query engine that runs on Hadoop. Impala offers scalable parallel database technology to Hadoop, enabling users to issue low-latency SQL queries to data stored in HDFS and Apache HBase without requiring data

movement or transformation. Impala is integrated with Hadoop to use the same file and data formats, metadata, security and resource management frameworks used by MapReduce, Apache Hive, Apache Pig and other Hadoop software.
Impala is promoted for analysts and data scientists to perform analytics on data stored in Hadoop via SQL or business intelligence tools. The result is that large-scale data processing (via MapReduce) and interactive queries can be done on the same system using the same data and metadata โ€“ removing the need to migrate data sets into specialized systems and/or proprietary formats simply to perform the analysis. https://impala.apache.org/

The other Impala is a medium-sized antelope found in eastern and southern Africa. The sole member of the genus Aepyceros.

Toad

The ELK (now called Elastic Stack) stack consists of Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana. Although they’ve all been built to work exceptionally well together, each one is a separate project that is driven by the open-source vendor Elasticโ€”which itself began as an enterprise search platform vendor. It has now become a full-service analytics software company, mainly because of the success of the ELK stack. Wide adoption of Elasticsearch for analytics has been the main driver of its popularity.
Elasticsearch is a juggernaut solution for your data extraction problems. A single developer can use it to find the high-value needles underneath all of your data haystacks, so you can put your team of data scientists to work on another project.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elasticsearch

The other elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and Eastern Asia. This animal should not be confused with the still larger moose (Alces alces) to which the name “elk” applies in British English and in reference to populations in Eurasia.

Ant

Apache Ant is a software tool for automating software build processes, which originated from the Apache Tomcat project in early 2000. It was a replacement for the Make build tool of Unix and was created due to a number of problems with Unix’s make. It is similar to Make but is implemented using the Java language, requires the Java platform, and is best suited to building Java projects. The most immediately noticeable difference between Ant and Make is that Ant uses XML to describe the build process and its dependencies, whereas Make uses Makefile format. By default, the XML file is named build.xml. Ant is an open-source project, released under the Apache License, by Apache Software Foundation. https://ant.apache.org/index.html

The other Ant is a eusocial insect of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from wasp-like ancestors in the Cretaceous period, about 99 million years ago, and diversified after the rise of flowering plants. More than 12,500 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified. They are easily identified by their elbowed antennae and the distinctive node-like structure that forms their slender waists.

GNU

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom 180px Heckert GNU white.svg

GNU is an operating system and an extensive collection of computer software. GNU is composed wholly of free software, most of which is licensed under the GNU Project’s own GPL. GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s Not Unix!”, chosen because GNU’s design is Unix-like, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix code. The GNU project includes an operating system kernel, GNU HURD, which was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF). However, non-GNU kernels, most famously Linux, can also be used with GNU software; as the Hurd kernel is not yet production-ready, this is how the GNU system is usually used. The combination of GNU software and the Linux kernel is commonly known as Linux (or less frequently GNU/Linux; see GNU/Linux naming controversy). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU

The wildebeests, also called gnus, are a genus of antelopes, scientific name Connochaetes. They belong to the family Bovidae, which includes antelopes, cattle, goats, sheep and other even-toed horned ungulates. Connochaetes includes two species, both native to Africa: the black wildebeest, or white-tailed gnu (C. gnou); and the blue wildebeest, or brindled gnu (C. taurinus). Fossil records suggest these two species diverged about one million years ago, resulting in a northern and a southern species. The blue wildebeest remained in its original range and changed very little from the ancestral species, while the black wildebeest changed more in order to adapt to its open grassland habitat in the south. The most obvious way of telling the two species apart are the differences in their colouring and in the way their horns are oriented.

Richard Stallman, founder of the GNU project
Richard Stallman, the founder of the project, views GNU as a “technical means to a social end”.[20] Relatedly Lawrence Lessig states in his introduction to the second edition of Stallman’s book Free Software, Free Society that in it Stallman has written about “the social aspects of software and how Free Software can create community and social justice.”[21]

Rhino

Inicio de ldp para 260px50px moziyarinocrnt.jpg

The Rhino project was started at Netscape in 1997. At the time, Netscape was planning to produce a version of Netscape Navigator written fully in Java and so it needed an implementation of JavaScript written in Java. When Netscape stopped work on Javagator, as it was called, the Rhino project was finished as a JavaScript engine. Since then, a couple of major companies (including Sun Microsystems) have licensed Rhino for use in their products and paid Netscape to do so, allowing work to continue on it. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Projects/Rhino

The other Rhino ( rhinoceros, from Greek rhinokeros, meaning ‘nose-horned’, from rhinos, meaning ‘nose’, and keratos, meaning ‘horn’), commonly abbreviated to rhino, is one of any five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae, as well as any of the numerous extinct species. Two of the extant species are native to Africa and three to Southern Asia.

Python

Image result for python software

Python is an interpreted high-level programming language for general-purpose programming. Created by Guido van Rossum and first released in 1991, Python has a design philosophy that emphasizes code readability, and a syntax that allows programmers to express concepts in fewer lines of code, notably using significant whitespace. It provides constructs that enable clear programming on both small and large scales. Python features a dynamic type system and automatic memory management. It supports multiple programming paradigms, including object-oriented, imperative, functional and procedural, and has a large and comprehensive standard library. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_(programming_language)

The other goat is a member of the family Bovidae and is closely related to the sheep as both are in the goat-antelope subfamily Caprinae. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat. Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species and have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins over much of the world.

Lama

LAMA is a framework for developing hardware-independent, high-performance code for heterogeneous computing systems. It facilitates the development of fast and scalable software that can be deployed on nearly every type of system with a single code base. The framework supports multiple target platforms within a distributed heterogeneous environment. It offers optimized device code on the backend side, high scalability through latency hiding and asynchronous execution across multiple nodes. https://www.libama.org/

The other Lama (Lama glama) is a domesticated South American camelid, widely used as a meat and pack animal by Andean cultures since the Pre-Columbian era.
They are very social animals and live with other llamas as a herd. The wool produced by a llama is very soft and lanolin-free. Llamas are intelligent and can learn simple tasks after a few repetitions. When using a pack, they can carry about 25 to 30% of their body weight for 8 to 13 km (5โ€“8 miles).[5]

Serpent

The serpent is one of the high-level programming languages used to write Ethereum contracts. The language, as suggested by its name, is designed to be very similar to Python; it is intended to be maximally clean and simple, combining many of the efficiency benefits of a low-level language with ease-of-use in programming style, and at the same time adding special domain-specific features for contract programming. The latest version of the Serpent compiler, available on GitHub, is written in C++, allowing it to be easily included in any client. https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Serpent

The serpent, or snake, is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols. The word is derived from Latin serpents, a crawling animal or snake. Snakes have been associated with some of the oldest rituals known to humankind and represent the dual expression of good and evil.

CockroachDB

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom cockroach

CockroachDB is the SQL database for building global, scalable cloud services that survive disasters. The database is scalable, in that a single instance can scale from a single laptop to thousands of servers. CockroachDB is designed to run in the cloud and be resilient to failures.[The result is a database that is described as “almost impossible” to take down. Even if multiple servers or an entire datacenter were to go offline, CockroachDB would keep services online.  https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/stable/

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom why are they called cockroaches

The other cockroach is an insects of the order Blattodea, which also includes termites. About 30 cockroach species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats. About five species are well known as pests.  The cockroaches are an ancient group, dating back at least as far as the Carboniferous period, some 320 million years ago. Those early ancestors however lacked the internal ovipositors of modern roaches.  They are common and hardy insects, and can tolerate a wide range of environments from Arctic cold to tropical heat.

Gecko

Mozillagecko-logo.gif

is a web browser engine (developed as part of Firefox) used in many applications developed by Mozilla Foundation and the Mozilla Corporation (notably the Firefox web browser including its mobile version other than iOS devices, and their e-mail client Thunderbird), as well as in many other open source software projects. Gecko is free and open-source software subject to the terms of the Mozilla Public License version 2.  It is designed to support open Internet standards, and is used by different applications to display web pages and, in some cases, an application’s user interface itself (by rendering XUL). Gecko offers a rich programming API that makes it suitable for a wide variety of roles in Internet-enabled applications, such as web browsers, content presentation, and client/server.  Gecko is written in C++ and JavaScript, and, since 2016, additionally in Rust; it is made to work for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. At least older versions of Gecko have been unofficially ported to e.g. BSDs and Solaris (and ancient versions have been ported to several operating systems), and old versions officially supported e.g. MeeGo. Its development is now overseen by the Mozilla Foundation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gecko_(software)

The other Gecko are lizards belonging to the infraorder Gekkota, found in warm climates throughout the world. They range from 1.6 to 60 cm (0.64 to 24 inches). Most geckos cannot blink, but they often lick their eyes to keep them clean and moist. They have a fixed lens within each iris that enlarges in darkness to let in more light.

PIG

Pig

Apache Pig is a high-level platform for creating programs that run on Apache Hadoop. The language for this platform is called Pig Latin.[1] Pig can execute its Hadoop jobs in MapReduce, Apache Tez, or Apache Spark[citation needed]. Pig Latin abstracts the programming from the Java MapReduce idiom into a notation which makes MapReduce programming high level, similar to that of SQL for relational database management systems. Pig Latin can be extended using user-defined functions (UDFs) which the user can write in Java, Python, JavaScript, Ruby or Groovy and then call directly from the language. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_(programming_tool)

The other pig is any of the animals in the genus Sus, within the even-toed ungulate family Suidae. Pigs include the domestic pig and its ancestor, the common Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa), along with other species; related creatures outside the genus include the peccary, the babirusa, and the warthog. Pigs, like all suids, are native to the Eurasian and African continents. Juvenile pigs are known as piglets. Pigs are highly social and intelligent animals.

Raptor

This is the original name of  SQLDeveloper (Look at this blog article by Lucas Jellema). Raptor (Or SQLDeveloper) is a Database IDE. A free graphical user interface, SQL Developer allows database users and administrators to do their database tasks. In this way raptor is an alternative for TOAD (See above). A productivity tool, SQL Developer’s main objective is to help the end user save time and maximize the return on investment in the Oracle Database technology stack.  SQL Developer supports Oracle Database 10g, 11g, and 12c and will run on any operating system that supports Java. SQL Developer provides powerful editors for working with SQL, PL/SQL, Stored Java Procedures, and XML. Run queries, generate execution plans, export data to the desired format (XML, Excel, HTML, PDF, etc.), execute, debug, test, and document your database programs, and much more with SQL Developer.

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom raptor

The other Raptor is a bird of prey or predatory bird, also known as raptors, refers to several species of birds that hunt and feed on rodents and other small animals. The term raptor is derived from the Latin word rapere, meaning to seize or take by force. These birds are characterized by keen vision that allows them to detect their prey during flight, as well as powerful talons and beaks. And even more spectacular is the Velociraptor (meaning “swift seizer” in Latin) is a genus of dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived approximately 75 to 71 million years ago during the later part of the Cretaceous Period. Two species are currently recognized, although others have been assigned in the past. The type species is V. mongoliensis; fossils of this species have been discovered in Mongolia. A second species, V. osmolskae, was named in 2008 for skull material from Inner Mongolia, China. This animal is know for their role in Jurassic Park.

Penguin

Logo

PENGUIN is a grammar-based language for programming graphical user interfaces. Code for each thread of control in a multi-threaded application is confined to its own module, promoting modularity and reuse of code.ptor  Networks of PENGUIN components (each composed of an arbitrary number of modules) can be used to construct large reactive systems with parallel execution, internal protection boundaries, and plug-compatible communication interfaces. We argue that the PENGUIN building-block approach constitutes a more appropriate framework for user interface programming than the traditional Seeheim Model. We discuss the design of PENGUIN and relate our experiences with applications. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penguin_Software

The other Penguin(order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae) are a group of aquatic, flightless birds. They live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, with only one species, the Galapagos penguin, found north of the equator. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have countershaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid and other forms of sea life caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans. Although almost all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone, and one species, the Galรกpagos penguin, lives near the equator.

Cheetah

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom download

Cheetah is a Python-powered template engine and code generator. It can be used standalone or combined with other tools and frameworks. Web development is its principle use, but Cheetah is very flexible and is also being used to generate C++ game code, Java, SQL, form emails and even Python code.  Cheetah is an open source template engine and code-generation tool written in Python. Cheetah can be used unto itself or incorporated with other technologies and stacks regardless of whether theyโ€™re written in Python or not. https://pythonhosted.org/Cheetah/

At its core, Cheetah is a domain-specific language for markup generation and templating which allows for full integration with existing Python code but also offers extensions to traditional Python syntax to allow for easier text-generation.

Porcupine

Image result for porcupine application server

Porcupine is an open-source Python-based Web application server that provides front-end and back-end revolutionary technologies for building modern data-centric Web 2.0 applications. Many of the tasks required for building web applications as you know them, are either eliminated or simplified. For instance, when developing a Porcupine application you don’t have to design a relational database. You only have to design and implement your business objects as Python classes, using the building blocks provided by the framework (data-types). Porcupine integrates a native object – key/value database, therefore the overheads required by an object-relational mapping technique when retrieving or updating a single object are removed. http://www.innoscript.org/

The other Porcupines are rodentian mammals with a coat of sharp spines, or quills, that protect against predators. The term covers two families of animals, the Old World porcupines of family Hystricidae, and the New World porcupines of family Erethizontidae. Both families belong to the infraorder Hystricognathi within the profoundly diverse order Rodentia and display superficially similar coats of quills: despite this, the two groups are distinct from each other and are not closely related to each other within the Hystricognathi.

Orca

Orca is a language for implementing parallel applications on loosely coupled distributed systems. Unlike most languages for distributed programming, it allows processes on different machines to share data. Such data are encapsulated in data-objects, which are instances of user-defined abstract data types. The implementation of Orca takes care of the physical distribution of objects among the local memories of the processors. In particular, an implementation may replicate and/or migrate objects in order to decrease access times to objects and increase parallelism.

The other orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators, as there is no animal that preys on them. Killer whales are considered a cosmopolitan species, and can be found in each of the world’s oceans in a variety of marine environments, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas – Killer whales are only absent from the Baltic and Black seas, and some areas of the Arctic ocean.

Seagull

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom seagull logo

Seagull is an Open Source (GPL) multi-protocol traffic generator test tool. Primarily aimed at IMS (3GPP, TISPAN, CableLabs) protocols (and thus being the perfect complement to SIPp for IMS testing), Seagull is a powerful traffic generator for functional, load, endurance, stress and performance/benchmark tests for almost any kind of protocol. Seagul is a traffic generator for load testing. Created by HP and released in 2006. http://gull.sourceforge.net/

The other Seagull is a seabird of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Until the 21st century, most gulls were placed in the genus Larus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several genera.

Squirrel

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom Untitled

Squirrel is a high level imperative, object-oriented programming language, designed to be a lightweight scripting language that fits in the size, memory bandwidth, and real-time requirements of applications like video games and hardware such as Electric Imp. MirthKit, a simple toolkit for making and distributing open source, cross-platform 2D games, uses Squirrel for its platform. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel_(programming_language)

The other Squirrel is a member of the family Sciuridae, a family that includes small or medium-size rodents. The squirrel family includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots (including woodchucks), flying squirrels, and prairie dogs amongst other rodents. Squirrels are indigenous to the Americas, Eurasia, and Africa, and were introduced by humans to Australia.[The earliest known squirrels date from the Eocene period and are most closely related to the mountain beaver and to the dormouse among other living rodent families.

Mouse

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom mouse

The Mouse programming language is a small computer programming language developed by Dr. Peter Grogono in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was developed as an extension of an earlier language called MUSYS, which was used to control digital and analog devices in an electronic music studio. Mouse was originally intended as a small, efficient language for microcomputers with limited memory. It is an interpreted, stack-based language and uses Reverse Polish notation. To make an interpreter as easy as possible to implement, Mouse is designed so that a program is processed as a stream of characters, interpreted one character at a time. The elements of the Mouse language consist of a set of (mostly) one-character symbols, each of which performs a specific function (see table below). Since variable names are limited to one character, there are only 26 possible variables in Mouse (named A-Z). Integers and characters are the only available data types. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_(programming_language)

Image result for mouse

The other mouse (plural: mice) is a small rodent characteristically having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a body-length scaly tail and a high breeding rate. The best known mouse species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). It is also a popular pet. In some places, certain kinds of field mice are locally common. They are known to invade homes for food and shelter.

Domestic mice sold as pets often differ substantially in size from the common house mouse. This is attributable both to breeding and to different conditions in the wild. The most well known strain, the white lab mouse, has more uniform traits that are appropriate to its use in research.

Pike

Logo for the Pike programming language.

Pike is an interpreted, general-purpose, high-level, cross-platform, dynamic programming language, with a syntax similar to that of C. Unlike many other dynamic languages, Pike is both statically and dynamically typed, and requires explicit type definitions. It features a flexible type system that allows the rapid development and flexible code of dynamically typed languages, while still providing some of the benefits of a statically typed language.  Pike features garbage collection, advanced data types, and first-class anonymous functions, with support for many programming paradigms, including object-oriented, functional and imperative programming. Pike is free software, released under the GPL, LGPL and MPL licenses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pike_(programming_language)

The other pike (Esox lucius), known simply as a pike, is a species of carnivorous fish of the genus Esox (the pikes). They are typical of brackish and fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere (i.e. holarctic in distribution).

Lynx

Lynx is a programming language for large distributed networks, using remote procedure calls. It was developed by the University of Wisconsinโ€“Madison in 1984 for the Charlotte multicomputer operating system.  In 1986 at the University of Rochester Lynx was ported to the Chrysalis operating system running on a BBN Butterfly multiprocessor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_(programming_language)

The other lynx is any of the four species within the Lynx genus of medium-sized wild cats, which includes the bobcat. The name “lynx” originated in Middle English via Latin from the Greek word ฮปฯฮณฮพ, derived from the Indo-European root leuk- (“light, brightness”) in reference to the luminescence of its reflective eyes.

ASP

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom asplogo square

ASP.NET is an open-source[server-side web application framework designed for web development to produce dynamic web pages. It was developed by Microsoft to allow programmers to build dynamic web sites, web applications and web services. It was first released in January 2002 with version 1.0 of the .NET Framework, and is the successor to Microsoft’s Active Server Pages (ASP) technology. ASP.NET is built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR), allowing programmers to write ASP.NET code using any supported .NET language. The ASP.NET SOAP extension framework allows ASP.NET components to process SOAP messages. ASP.NET’s successor is ASP.NET Core. It is a re-implementation of ASP.NET as a modular web framework, together with other frameworks like Entity Framework. The new framework uses the new open-source .NET Compiler Platform (codename “Roslyn”) and is cross platform. ASP.NET MVC, ASP.NET Web API, and ASP.NET Web Pages (a platform using only Razor pages) have merged into a unified MVC 6.

The other “Asp” is the modern Anglicisation of the word “aspis,” which in antiquity referred to any one of several venomous snake species found in the Nile region. It is believed that aspis referred in Egyptian mythology to what is now known as the Egyptian cobra. The Egyptian cobra (Naja haje) is a species of cobra found in Africa. It is one of the largest cobra species native to Africa, second to the forest cobra (Naja melanoleuca).

Falcon

FalconplLogo.png

Falcon is an open source, multi-paradigm programming language. Design and implementation is led by Giancarlo Niccolai,[3][4] a native of Bologna, Italy and Information Technology graduate from Pistoia. Falcon translates computer source code to virtual machine instructions for evaluation. The virtual machine[5] is intended to be both a stand-alone interpreter as well as for integration in third-party embedding applications. A core design consideration for the Falcon programming language is to provide acceptably high performing scripting plug-ins to multi threaded data acquisition, reporting and dispersion applications. As programming languages go, Falcon design leans more towards conciseness of code and expressiveness than general readability. The Falcon implementation does provide facilities for source level documentation and this documentation may become important as the mixed paradigm potential of Falcon scripting attempts to meet the problems faced with programming in the large.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falcon_(programming_language)

The other Falcons are birds of prey in the genus Falco, which includes about 40 species. Falcons are widely distributed on all continents of the world except Antarctica (though closely related raptors did occur there in the Eocene. Adult falcons have thin, tapered wings, which enable them to fly at high speed and change direction rapidly. Fledgling falcons, in their first year of flying, have longer flight feathers, which make their configuration more like that of a general-purpose bird such as a broadwing. This makes flying easier while learning the exceptional skills required to be effective hunters as adults. The falcons are the largest genus in the Falconinae subfamily of Falconidae, which itself also includes another subfamily comprising caracaras and a few other species. All these birds kill with their beaks, using a “tooth” on the side of their beaksโ€”unlike the hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey in the Accipitridae, which use their feet.

Cobra

ts and contracts. It has lambda expressions, closures, list comprehensions, and generators. Cobra is an open-source project; it was released under the MIT License on February 29, 2008. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_(programming_language)

Cobra is the common name of various elapid snakes, most of which belonging to the genus Naja. Biology: All of the known cobras are venomous and many are capable of rearing upwards and producing a hood when threatened.

Big cat family

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom big cats 41

The informal term “big cat” is typically used to refer to any of the four largest (living) members of the entire Panthera genus. Among the five total species within the Panthera genus, these four are the only cats that are able to roar. In descending order of their maximum potential size, these four species are: tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards, with the tiger (Panthera tigris) being the largest. A more liberal and expansive definition is sometimes used which may include the snow leopard, puma, clouded leopard, Sunda clouded leopard and/or cheetah, although these added species do not roar.

Sloth

Sloth is the world’s slowest computer language. Proudly announced by Lary Page at the 2014 Google WWDC as a reaction to Microsoft C-flat-minor. Both languages are still competing in the race for the slowest computer language. Sloth has the advantage of exponential growth of the costs per line of code. Sloth stands for Seriously Low Optimization ThresHolds, has been under development for a really, really long time. I mean, like, forever, man. https://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?doc_id=1322644

Welcome to the Zoo of programming languages inspired by the Animal Kingdom sloth

The other Sloths are arboreal mammals noted for the slowness of movement and for spending most of their lives hanging upside down in the trees of the tropical rainforests of South America and Central America. The six species are in two families: two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths. In spite of this traditional naming, all sloths actually have three toes. The two-toed sloths have two digits, or fingers, on each forelimb. The sloth is so named because of its very low metabolism and deliberate movements, sloth being related to the word slow.

Add your languages

Hope you enjoyed this small tour. There are probably many more languages named after animals. Please add them as comments and I will update the article. Hopefully, we can cover the entire animal kingdom. Thank you in advance for your submissions.
