Deel 1 van een serie van drie artikelen met een rondleiding door de wereld van Java Server Faces. In dit eerste deel kijken we naar de basis-elementen binnen de JSF standaard. Het volgende deel gaat in op de Oracle implementatie van JSF: ADF Faces. Hierin kijken we ondermeer naar de ingebouwde AJAX faciliteiten van ADF Faces. Ook bespreken we dan de data-binding faciliteiten van ADF Faces. Het derde en laatste deel gaat in op andere JSF componenten libraries zoals Apache MyFaces en IceFaces, het combineren van verschillende libraries en de ontwikkeling van eigen JSF componenten. Als IDE maken we gebruik van Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3.1, hoewel dit eerste deel geen Oracle specifieke faciliteiten gebruikt. Hoewel enige Java achtergrond nuttig is, zijn de artikelen toegankelijk voor alle Oracle ontwikkelaars.
Het ontwikkelen van Web Applicaties met Java/J2EE technologie was de afgelopen jaren niet altijd een feestje. Het vele, complexe werk met vaak teleurstellende resultaten nodigden organisaties en ontwikkelaars gewend aan productieve, rijke grafische ontwikkeltools als Oracle Forms bepaald niet uit. Java Server Faces zou daar verandering in kunnen brengen.
Met JSF is er eindelijk is er een standaard J(2)EE technologie die wel uitnodigend is: productief, gebaseerd op componenten, een declaratieve, visuele, 4GL vorm van ontwikkelen (property palette, drag & drop, WYSIWYG editor), een mechanisme van events en triggers en programmatische toegang tot de pagina-elementen.
In dit artikel maken we kennis met de kern van JSF door stapje voor stapje de belangrijkste elementen door te nemen. Dit zijn achtereenvolgens UI Componenten, het Model met Managed Beans en Binding attributen en methodes, de Events-en-Listeners infrastructuur, Converters en Validators en Navigation. .

| Learn how to configure an ESB to “publish” enterprise events using a simple example.
(Published on Oracle Technology Network, February 2007) One of the more important concepts in the domain of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is that of Event-Driven Architecture (EDA). Similar to the event mechanism in, for example, JavaScript or 4GL environments where triggersâ€â€pieces of executable program codeâ€â€can be hooked into events such as button-pressed, field-value-changed, or query-submitted, EDA specifies how “services” are hooked into “business events.” Most business eventsâ€â€ranging from the arrival of an order or request for quote to the hiring of a new employee or the delivery of some piece of equipmentâ€â€trigger several responses across an organization. At a slightly more detailed level, there are events within process stepsâ€â€such as failure to invoke a service, crossing a predefined threshold, or reaching a specific targetâ€â€that may interest parties external to the process itself. EDA allows you to publish all these events from the process that creates or encounters them to a central event-handling backbone, thereby making them available from there to all interested parties. The process or service where the event originates needn’t concern itself with these external parties; otherwise, in addition to straining the execution of that particular process, you would end up with tightly intertwined systems (and hence a maintenance nightmare). In this article, you will learnâ€â€via a simple example based on Oracle ESBâ€â€how this central backbone can be configured to carry published events as messages to the external parties. | “Code schrijven is leuk”, hoorde ik laatst iemand zeggen. In eerste instantie was ik het daar helemaal mee eens. Toen ik er wat meer over na ging denken kwam ik tot de conclusie dat die stelling helemaal niet waar is. Het schrijven van code is niet leuk, het oplossen van een vraagstuk is leuk. Het puzzelen, het uitdokteren, het komen tot de meest efficiënte manier van de oplossing, dat is hetgene wat het werk zo leuk maakt.
De lol van deze nieuwe rubriek in Optimize is dan ook voor een belangrijk deel dat puzzelen, de zoektocht naar de creatieve oplossing. Tegelijkertijd zullen in deze rubriek allerlei waardevolle, deels nieuwe en geavanceerde en deels al langer bestaande maar toch onbekende mogelijkheden van Oracle SQL de revue passeren. Er kan zoveel meer met SQL in Oracle dan we vaak denken. Het gebruik van Oracle 9i en 10g SQL syntax en functies biedt mogelijkheden die eerder slechts bestonden door gebruik te maken van PL/SQL.Hopelijk inspireren de puzzels je die functionaliteit ook in de praktijk te gaan brengen!
Voor de eerste SQL puzzel kijken we naar het kabinet Balkenende IV.Na de verkiezingen van 22 november 2006 werd er alom gemopperd dat het zo vreselijk moeilijk zou zijn om op basis van de uitslag een stabiel kabinet te vormen. Maar zijn alle mogelijkheden wel goed onderzocht? We gaan eens kijken aan de hand van enkele SQL Queries wat nou precies de uitslag was op 22 november, wat zoal de mogelijkheden voor een drie-partijen kabinet waren en wat kleine verschuivingen in de verkiezingsuitslag aan nieuwe mogelijkheden zouden hebben opgeleverd. AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript for XML) is de hype du jour voor het ontwerp van snelle, interactieve webpagina’s waarin asynchroon gevraagde gegevens worden opgehaald van een webserver en dynamisch (onderdelen van) de HTML pagina’s in de browser worden ververst . Google Maps en Google Earth zijn bekende AJAX applicaties.
Het Amsterdamse bedrijf Backbase is internationaal bekend om zijn AJAX technologie. Websites gemaakt met de AJAX software van Backbase zijn meer dan een statische presentatie in HTML, het zijn interactieve internetapplicaties en geven de gebruiker de snelheid, handigheid en gevoel van een desktop programma als bijvoorbeeld MS Word of MS Outlook. Ontwikkelaars kunnen gebruik maken van een set prachtige AJAX componenten (ook wel UI widgets genoemd) die websites dynamischer en interactiever maken, zoals buttons, inputvelden, menu’s, panels, grafieken en tabellen. Sinds mei 2006 is de Backbase JSF editie beschikbaar, die de AJAX functionaliteit van de client editie beschikbaar maakt voor het JavaServer Faces framework (JSF), standaard onderdeel van het JEE 5 platform.

Developing Web applications using Java/JEE technology has not been a picnic over the last few years. It was often hard work, complex, not very productive, and the results were disappointing, too,especially for developers with an Oracle Forms background. Now, at last there is a Joyful Successor to Forms: JSF, or JavaServer Faces. It is component based, supports an event-trigger model, has declarative validation and binding to a backend model, programmatic manipulation of page elements, is productively supported by IDEs that provide for a largely drag-and-drop WYSISYG development style, and it is based on an industry-wide standard. JSF finally brings Java Web application development to the level of Oracle Forms
This article introduces JavaServer Faces to developers with some understanding of the development of HTML Web applications using Java technology. We will discuss the core JSF concepts and create a simple application in a number of steps, using Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3 as our IDE. The article concludes with overviews of both Oracle ADF Faces, a very rich library of JSF components, and Oracle JHeadstart a tool for generating database-based ADF Faces applications. Note that this paper will cut some corners when discussing the theory-we cannot, of course, cram material discussed in rather thick books into this single article.

Most business events – ranging from the arrival of an order or request for quote to the hiring of a new employee or the delivery of some piece of equipment – trigger several responses across an organization. At a slightly more detailed level, there are events within process steps–such as failure to invoke a service, crossing a predefined threshold, or reaching a specific target–that may interest parties external to the process itself.
EDA allows you to publish all these events from the process that creates or encounters them to a central event-handling backbone, making them available from there to all interested parties in a very loosely coupled fashion.
This presentation will demonstrate how we can implement an Event Driven Architecture using the Oracle Enterprise Service Bus and how this central backbone can be configured to carry published events as messages to the external parties. We will see integration with a BPEL powered Workflow, a file based message exchange and communication through direct DML in the database. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the merits of EDA as well as the overlap and integration between the ESB and BPEL components in the Oracle SOA Suite.
The paper discusses concepts, describes a design and demonstrates the steps to implement using JDeveloper and Oracle SOA Suite, both ESB and BPEL PM. It is of interest to architects, analysts and developers. No intimate knowledge of SOA concepts is required.

| Following hot on the heels of SOA based on business services with programmatic interfaces, we will soon see the emergence of User Interface Services – in the form of Portlets based on WSRP and JSR-168 standards. This will allow for a new way of developing web applications: largely by composing user interfaces from available Portlets – services with a user interface that can be published anywhere on the intranet or internet.
With technology such as Oracle WebCenter, we can easily publish an ordinary web application – for example ADF Faces – as a Portlet. And we can just as easily embed one or more Portlets in our web application, and even have them communicate and synchronize. A Portlet for looking up a Customer or Product can be made available by a central agency in your organization and reused across many applications. That is not just the business logic, but the User Interface itself!
This presentation discusses the opportunities arising from Oracle WebCenter and the leveraging of the next generation of Portlet-technology. The boundaries between Portal frameworks and Web Applications will fade as the latter start to include Portlets. A new chapter in Web Application development is being written, largely founded on the SOA principles of loosely coupling, design by contract and reuse of services. The presentation discusses a pragmatic approach to get started with these concepts and ideas.
We will see an extensive demonstration of creating Portlets as well as an ADF Web Applications that embeds those Portlets, showing the reuse potential. Subsequently we will change one of those Portlet-implementations, causing the Portlet consuming application to show the updated Portlet proving the idea of UI-SOA even more strongly.

| This paper explains how AJAX(-like) features can be used by ADF Faces developers to add functional richness, dynamic user interfaces and high interactivity to their applications – largely declaratively without any programming.
Web Applications have recently started their second life: Web 2.0 it is called. And AJAX is the hype du jour. However, the beef of Web 2.0 is more than just another hype. It is about creating Web Applications with the richness of Desktop applications. With fast, interactive responsiveness, functionally rich widgets and dynamically updated, visually appealing pages.
Typically, this type of User Interface either requires expensive libraries and/or lots of messy hand-coding of JavaScript. However, with ADF Faces the rich interaction comes as part of the framework. With mostly declarative settings and little server side Java programming, we can develop the rich functionality that characterizes Web 2.0 applications.
This presentation will make JSF web developers understand the way AJAX has been implemented in ADF Faces and how to make the most of it. It will also discuss the rich UI components that have very recently been released by Oracle – to add the latest generation of widgets such as the Accordion, client-side drag & drop and spreadsheet-style data grids.

| Het BI landschap is ernstig in beroering. Enerzijds door spectaculaire overnames links en rechts, maar eigenlijk veel meer nog door een aantal interessante ontwikkelingen ten aanzien van de betekenis van Business Intelligence in veel organisaties.
BI was lang het domein van gespecialiseerde analisten die op basis van historische data warehouses met lange termijn terugblikken en voorspellingen kwamen. Dat gaat veranderen. Er is een beweging gaande die Business Intelligence bijna real-time maakt, in de handen legt van enerzijds het management (dashboards, performance management) en anderzijds de eindgebruiker op de werkvloer die de Analytische informatie gebruikt voor direct ingrijpen in operationele processen. Deze beweging wordt mogelijk gemaakt door recente technische ontwikkelingen, als rijke web interfaces, gestandaardiseerde interfaces en services en krachtiger Analytische Engines. En gedreven door een sterke vraag vanuit de organisaties, opkomst van Service geOriënteerde architecturen en data-collectoren zoals RFID en BPEL.
Oracle is zeer actief op overnamegebied. Met name in de strijd met SAP om de eerste plaats op de markt voor ERP applicaties slaat Oracle slag na slag. Zo kochten Larry et al Peoplesoft, waarmee gelijktijdig JD Edwards werd ingelijfd, en Siebel. Oracle bouwt bijvoorbeeld een imposante Service Oriented Architecture Suite bovenop haar Fusion Middleware platform en investeert stevig in Business Intelligence. Met betrekking tot BI had Oracle misschien ook wel een inhaalslag ten opzichte van de concurrentie te maken. Maar daar is het bedrijf uit Redwood dan ook voortvarend mee bezig. Hoogste tijd om Oracle’s propositie op het vlak van BI eens onder de loep te nemen. In dit artikel worden een aantal nieuwkomers in het Oracle BI productportfolio kort geintroduceerd. | Het op een agile wijze uitvoeren van softwareprojecten heeft voor de projectmanager gevolgen voor de wijze van sturing en rapportage. Begrippen als “earned value†en ETC zijn binnen agile lastiger in te vullen. Er wordt meer gesproken over hoeveelheid “features completed†en “features to doâ€Â. Daarbij is het voor een projectmanager soms lastig uit te leggen wat de gevolgen zijn van een agile werkwijze. In deze sessie wordt ingegaan op de achtergrond van agile en de wijze waarop projectvoortgang kan worden gemeten en gerapporteerd.

Hoe moeilijk is het niet om te kiezen wat je gaat kijken op televisie! Als je alleen maar naar de 13 meest voor de hand liggende kanalen kijkt, dan is er keuze uit maar liefst 162 verschillende programma’s. En je kunt er hooguit 5% van kijken! Hoe maak je die keuze?In deze puzzel gaan we kijken hoe we een SQL Query kunnen ontwikkelen die de keuze voor ons maakt! | Oracle WebCenter is een typisch “Next Generation” of ook wel “2.0” product. Op basis van ervaringen uit het verleden, de nieuwste trends, inzichten en standaarden, komt Oracle in WebCenter met de oplossing voor alle problemen… ja, op welk gebied eigenlijk?
WebCenter was een van de grote aankondigingen op Oracle Open World 2006, een klein jaar geleden. En je kunt een heleboel dingen zeggen over WebCenter – het ziet er gelikt uit, het integreert allerlei functionaliteit en informatie in de user interface, het ondersteunt business gebruikers, het vormt een platform voor het applicatie landschap van de toekomst – maar een precieze definitie geven van het product is een stuk lastiger. Oracle heeft de term “[context rich] human interaction framework” geïntroduceerd voor WebCenter en bedoelt daarmee aan te geven dat op basis van het WebCenter framework alle vormen van interactie van eindgebruikers met elkaar – communicatie, samenwerking, kennisdeling – en met data en applicaties – integrale zoekoperaties, content management, startpunt voor workflow operaties – samengebracht en geïntegreerd kunnen worden.

| Een van de grote en vervelende uitdagingen bij het maken van SQL Puzzels, maar belangrijker nog bij het bouwen van de demo-applicaties en vooral bij het testen van nieuw ontwikkelde applicaties, is het samenstellen van een set van voorbeeld-, demo- of test-data. Eindeloos voornamen, achternamen, plaatsnamen en geboortedata invoeren is stomvervelend en als er ook nog eisen aan de kwaliteit worden gesteld – zoals een evenwichtige verdeling over een waardenbereik of een uniekheid van bepaalde combinaties van velden – wordt het helemaal een nachtmerrie.
Er zijn tools te koop die test-data generatie doen – misschien trouwens zijn er ook open source producten te krijgen. Maar in deze Puzzel gaan we zelf testdata genereren, met niets anders dan SQL tot onze beschikking.

| Op dinsdag 6 november 2007 vond de AMIS Query “Introductie in de praktische toepassingen van Oracle XML DB” plaats. Twee specialisten van AMIS – Database Consultant Marco Gralike en Technisch Architect Harm Verschuren – presenteerden over XMLDB.
De drie onderdelen van deze sessie staan hieronder beschreven. De bijbehorende presentaties kunnen ook gedownload worden. XMLDB: Een Introductie in de Architectuur Het eerste deel van de AMIS Query zal kort ingaan op de historie en architectuur van XMLDB, het samenspel van de verschillende functionele onderdelen van de Oracle database met XMLDB, de Oracle XMLDB functionaliteit, de XPath en XQuery talen die men kan gebruiken om XMLDB te ontsluiten en de huidige Oracle 11g mogelijkheden van de Native Database Web Services. Aan de hand van voorbeelden en/of demo applicaties word de functionaliteit en de mogelijkheden van Oracle XMLDB 11g nog verder toegelicht. XMLDB: De Bouwstenen en ‘Best Practices’ Dit deel zal ingaan op het hoe en waarom, logisch en fysiek design, ten aanzien van XML gebruik in de database. De relationele valkuilen die men tegen zou kunnen komen bij het toepassen van XML in een historisch gezien relationele omgeving. Hoe om te gaan met XML data storage. Er zal dieper gekeken worden naar XMLType CLOB en Object Relationele opslag, de problemen hiermee in Oracle 10g en de mogelijke oplossingen, bijvoorbeeld door het toepassen van Binary XML en XMLIndex technieken, die Oracle 11g biedt voor het succesvol toepassen van XMLType storage. XMLDB: Pagoni Universal Connector – Een AMIS XMLDB Use Case In het derde deel van deze AMIS Query zal door middel van een use case worden gepresenteerd hoe XMLDB kan worden ingezet als oplossing bij een integratievraagstuk. Het gaat hierbij om de integratie van een door AMIS gebouwd softwarepakket binnen het IT-landschap van een grote gemeente. De wens van de opdrachtgever was hierbij dat gegevens als xml berichten moesten worden uitgewisseld tussen de divere systemen. Omdat het softwarepakket door AMIS als een standaardoplossing voor de grondexploitatie op de markt wordt gepositioneerd, diende de oplossing te voldoen aan de zware eisen ten aanzien van de herbruikbaarheid voor andere gemeenten, de onderhoudbaarheid van de code en een betrouwbare werking van de software…en natuurlijk niet te duur!De gekozen oplossing is een service georienteerde architectuur gebouwd in PL/SQL en XMLDB. | Many integration patterns involve messages being received, transformed, enriched and sent onwards. The Oracle Enterprise Service Bus supports most of these patterns and operations, but not all of them in a very straightforward manner. For enriching a message from an ESB Service and then sending it to another than the enriching adapter service is not a trivial task.
However simple this scenario, the Oracle ESB has no trivial way of implementing the enrichment of an incoming message. There has been some discussion on the OTN Forums (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=455872&tstart=0) and there is a sample available on OTN that shows some of the desired end-result, but it is a little unclear how that is put together. In this article, we will look at a detailed implementation of the message enrichment scenario, as described above.

| For six years,we have been build Web applications using Oracle’s Java Technology, from BC4J and JSP to the full ADF stack. In this presentation, I would like to share our experiences and turn them into our and your lessons learned.
Topics include the interaction between the database and the middle tier, team collaboration and software engineering, implementing business logic, advanced JSF solutions and (somewhat) rich UI functionality. We will briefly go into productivity on our three most recent ADF projects. Demonstrations will show trees, shuttles, popup windows, complex query forms, multi-select list of values windows and some nifty UI functions such as a “Global Recent Navigation History” and End User application customizations. | En weer was San Francisco roodgekleurd: Oracle Open World 2007 trok ruim 40.000 bezoekers die zich vier dagen lang laafden aan Oracle, in de vorm keynotes, presentaties, demonstraties, discussies, ‘social events’ en de ‘exhibition hall’ met honderden leveranciers in het Oracle ecosysteem. Weinig groot nieuws dit jaar, maar wel een consistente en coherente boodschap. De JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) API is het onderdeel van de Java SE dat definieert hoe je vanuit Java via SQL met de database communiceert. Het bestaat uit een set interfaces en classes in de packages java.sql en javax.sql en is databaseonafhankelijk. Database vendors als Oracle en IBM, maar ook andere partijen als DataDirect leveren database specifieke drivers met de implementatie voor de low-level communicatie en vertaling van datastructuren. De JDBC standaard staat het trouwens toe om deze uit te breiden, bijvoorbeeld met database specifieke functionaliteit.
Met het uitkomen van Java SE 6, eind 2006, is ook JDBC bij een nieuwe versie, 4.0, aanbeland. De doelstelling van JSR-221 die aan versie 4.0 ten grondslag ligt was ‘to provide an improved developer experience while working with relational SQL data stores from the Java platform’. Dit vertaalt zich enerzijds naar een betere ondersteuning voor database features en anderzijds naar een hoger gebruiksgemak voor de programmeur. Niet onbelangrijk is het feit dat het volledig backwards compatible is. In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op een aantal van de nieuwe features van JDBC 4.0. | The AMIS Query on Monday 17th of December turned out to be an interesting get-to-gether. Dimitri Gielis, APEX expert, and Lucas Jellema, ADF specialist, co-presented this session. They both introduced the technology, its architecture, some of its strong features and sometimes a little reluctantly some of the weaker areas.
The audience got a good overview of what APEX and ADF are about. The presenters did not really hazard a feature based comparison of the two development stacks, but the audience probably got enough information to that for themselves.
One of the highlights of the session was the demonstration by both presenters of the On Line Survey application they had developed in under six hours time based on the same database design. It turned out that while the technologies are very different, many solutions for particular challenges in the applications were very similar.
