ADF interaction with business service – an ongoing discussion
0The ADF framework strongly suggests if not dictates a certain application architecture. Through ADF BC (Business Components) – the predominant business service implementation with ADF – applications will typically interact directly with the database, over JDBC Database Connections from a shared connection pool. Developers who create the ADF BC Entity Objects and View Objects will be quite aware of the data model and the database implementation. They will usually write SQL. And the result of their work is substantially coupled with the database. Transactions across multiple data source are very hard to implement in that typical ADF BC scenario because ADF BC talks to a single database and typically controls its own transaction.
When ADF applications are developed in an environment where an enterprise architecture has been laid down, and decoupling is an important objective and service orientation is mandated – then this typical implementation of the business service using ADF BC connecting directly to the database may not be desirable or even allowed.

Oracle RDBMS 10GR1: solution to avoid character encoding in XML with UPDATEXML
On a recent project, I ran into a problem with an XML document, that had to be enclosed within another XML document, generated from a database query. The problem I ran into was the character encoding of the XMLElement function, which eventually was worked around with UPDATEXML.
In this blog post I would like to share with you several attempts to solve this problem, why they failed and the final solution to the problem.
Printing of official documents happened in a separate printing module. Whenever a document needed to be printed, an XML document was generated in a database query and sent to the printing module. Most of the data came from relational database tables, but pieces of standard text were supplied as XML documents by another party… and saved in our database in an XMLType column based on CLOB storage.
Our printing module expected to find these standard text XML documents within a tag in our generated XML document. Also both XML documents, our generated XML and the supplied XML, had different namespaces, this needed to maintained this way. The Oracle database version we were working with was 10.1.0.5.0.

Review of Oracle Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook (Packt Publishing) by Edwin Biemond, Guido Schmutz, Eric Elzinga et. al.
3Recently I gained access to an electronic copy of the just released Oracle Service Bus 11g Development Cookbook, written by five authors – all experts on OSB and three personal acquaintances of mine. I was very interested in learning about the final result after hearing many intermediate comments during the writing process as well as reading the occasional remark on Twitter. Knowing Guido, Eric and Edwin and assuming the same expert level for the other two authors, I anticipated a very interesting read.

Business Validation in Oracle SOA Suite 11g using Schematron
4In a previous post I’ve explained the Schematron standard, how it works and how to use it. In the Oracle SOA Suite you can ‘Validate Semantic’ on the input (request) of a routing rule in a Mediator component by selecting a Schematron file. This is the Schemtron xml file in which you define your validation rules. The SOA Suite takes care of applying them on the request by executing the double transformation. However, to be able to get the Schematron file working you need to declare the namespaces of the input message and rewrite a report rule to an assert rule.
