OOW 2012: The yearly AMIS Review from Oracle Open World and JavaOne – slides available
0Yesterday (16th October), 10 days of the end of the yearly Oracle show in San Francisco, AMIS organized its ‘Review from Oracle Open World 2012′ session with an overview of news, trends, announcements, special finds and interesting rumors . This session was ‘sold out’ (even though it was free). For close to 4 hours, the AMIS crew at OOW enlightened the audience about their main conclusions and greatest inspirational moments from the conference. OOW 2012: Questions to get answered during this conference
0The show of the year is around the corner: on Sunday it will all start again, the Oracle Open World conference. Tens of thousands of developers, architects, administrators, project managers, decision makers and others involved with Oracle products one way or another are gathering in and around San Francisco. AMIS will attend with an 8 person team. We will present, network, publish and investigate. As much as we bring our knowledge and experience to the conference, we also want to find out many things. A quick list of some of the questions that are on the top of my head to get answered during thus year’s conference:
CloudAfter last year’s announcements, we have not really seen any concrete cloud instances from Oracle. I hope to learn during this conference where exactly we stand and are headed with the Oracle Cloud – both the Application and the Platform Services. My focus will be on the latter in particular: what is the functionality and non-functionality offered by the various services – from Database Service to Web Services (PHP, Ruby and Python support) and Oracle Cloud Developer Services Hudson (for continuous integration, Git and GitHub for source control, wiki and tasks for More >
JavaOne 2010 – Keynote by Thomas Kurian – Java Strategy and Directions
0JavaOne started this morning with the first many dozens sessions and the Java Pavilion & Exhibition hall. The official kick off so to speak took place tonight, with Thomas Kurian’s keynote, in which he unfolded Oracle’s plans for Java. He wants to make it abundantly clear how important Java is to Oracle, how important the unity of the community around Java is and how urgent it is for him (almost on a personal level) to see the Java platform and community regain momentum, after a period of FUD and near stand-still. His keynote contained a number of very concrete statements and plans that Oracle intends to execute. He did not necessarily say this out loud – but between the lines I clearly read that Sun had fantastic ideas but not necessarily the capacity (and at some point obviously the budget) to deliver on them and that Oracle intends to bring its ability to execute and deliver (see for example the acquisition and subsequent integration of BEA and others) to the table and get Java moving once more.
His announcements included:
- Java SE 7 will be available in the Summer of 2011 -provided JCP joins in and approves.

The AMIS team reports from Oracle Open World – big and small announcements, guidance and tips
Last night, the AMIS crew that visited the Oracle Open World conference reported their findings in a 3.5 hour session. In segments on SOA & BPM, Middleware, Database, Oracle Applications (AIA) and Development technology, we presented the highlights from close to 1900 sessions – no small feat. And utterly incomplete of course. However, all in all, for people who did not attend the "red party" the evening gave a very useful overview of what Oracle is doing and where it is heading.
