JavaOne 2012: What’s new in Servlet3.1: An Overview
0Session at JavaOne come in various shapes. Some are visionary, high level and future oriented. Others are detailed and discuss practical, sometimes very fine grained topics. One of the sessions I attended was somewhere in between: future oriented yet pretty concrete at the same time. It was probably my favorite session at JavaOne this year: What’s new in Servlet3.1: An Overview by Shing Wai Cha and Rajiv Mordani. The passion of the presenters – their enthusiasm to explain the current development of the Servlet API and their ability to demonstrate some rather tough concepts were pivotal. Many presenters can take their style as an example they can learn from.
The Servlet 3.1 API is part of the JEE 7 edition- that is scheduled for complete release in April 2013. The Servlet Specification is largely complete, although some elements are still under discussion as became clear during this talk. The probably most important new requirement in Servlet 3.1 is the ability to do Web Socket interaction. JavaOne 2012: Strategy and Technical Keynote

While the double entendre of ‘SUNday’ no longer exists, this first day is still an important day. To set the stage, manage expectations, build on the atmosphere and layout the roadmap (starting that sometimes not even subtle massaging of the minds). The keynote sessions are the key events that define scope and themes for the conference.
Java is very much on the move again. After the virtual stand still just before and for a while after Oracle took over (from) Sun, last year saw a dramatic increase in the Java movement. This year that thread continues. Not with many spectacular announcement, but with a solid pursuit of earlier roadmaps and an apparently good collaboration between vendors in the Java space. The one big elephant in the room – that is actually not in the room at JavaOne – is Google. Otherwise for example, Oracle staff happily shared the stage for this keynote session with IBM.
This year’s overall slogan for JavaOne is: Make the future Java.

Dinsdag 18 september: Oracle Open World & JavaOne 2012 Preview mini-conferenties – 12 presentaties op 1 avond
0Van 30 september tot 5 oktober is San Francisco weer het domein van tegen de 45.000 deelnemers aan de Oracle Open World en JavaOne conferenties. Ruim 2000 presentaties worden daar gehouden, in vele tientallen zalen in hotels en het Moscone Conferentie Center in downtown San Francisco, waaronder pakweg 20 door Nederlandse sprekers. Hoewel honderden Nederlandse bezoekers op deze conferentie aanwezig zullen zijn, zijn er natuurlijk ook veel ‘thuisblijvers’. Om deze groep (en iedereen die wel gaat) toch of alvast een voorproefje te geven, organiseert AMIS voor de vijfde keer de Preview sessie voor Oracle Open World en JavaOne – een avond waarop Nederlandse sprekers met een OOW en/of JavaOne verleden, heden of toekomst een presentatie houden, bijvoorbeeld als generale repetitie voor hun optreden in San Francisco.
Deze sessie is gratis toegankelijk. Aanmelden kan via de AMIS website: Preview Oracle Open World en JavaOne 2012. De deuren gaan open op dinsdag 18 september om 16.30, om 18.00 uur is er een maaltijd en rond 21.00 uur eindigen de laatste vier sprekers en openen we de bar.

My Agenda for Oracle Open World 2011
0As the conference draws awfully close, I am trying to compose my final agenda. Some anchorpoints are my own sessions – those I have to attend. Then there is a number of special meetings that I will attend. The number of additional sessions I can just walk into is fairly limited unfortunately, especially after subtracting the time needed for various keynotes and my yearly visit to the demo grounds.
Several key themes during this conference are bound to be: cloud, appliances, Fusion Applications (and now for real), Run Time End-to-End Insight and Administration on technical/infrastructure and business level, business process orientation and some mobile and social as well.

JavaOne under construction – roads closed down, tent being erected, attendees flying in
0San Francisco on the eve of JavaOne 2010. Various preparations are underway in the city. Posters and banners, even on the sidewalks, mark the largest Java show on the planet. One of the true eye catchers this year is the closing down of Mason St for the full length of a block. Traffic is diverted, to allow for ‘The Zone’ (a lounge for developers and architects, OTN Live and various exhibitions and activities around Java. The preparations have just started, the road has been closed and the construction of the tent has started. See the pictures below to get an impression.
