Oracle RDBMS 10GR1: solution to avoid character encoding in XML with UPDATEXML

On a recent project, I ran into a problem with an XML document, that had to be enclosed within another XML document, generated from a database query. The problem I ran into was the character encoding of the XMLElement function, which eventually was worked around with UPDATEXML.

In this blog post I would like to share with you several attempts to solve this problem, why they failed and the final solution to the problem.

Printing of official documents happened in a separate printing module. Whenever a document needed to be printed, an XML document was generated in a database query and sent to the printing module. Most of the data came from relational database tables, but pieces of standard text were supplied as XML documents by another party… and saved in our database in an XMLType column based on CLOB storage.

Our printing module expected to find these standard text XML documents within a tag in our generated XML document. Also both XML documents, our generated XML and the supplied XML, had different namespaces, this needed to maintained this way. The Oracle database version we were working with was 10.1.0.5.0.

The ADF must-go-to session at OOW 2012: the ADF EMG meeting on Sunday 30th September

Just like the previous two years, ADF will be one of the major topics at Oracle Open World 2012. Wherever you turn your head, ADF based screens will be right in your face. Almost every UI coming out of Oracle is developed using ADF. And a rapidly increasing number of developers around the world – either with a classic Forms background, a Java/JEE history or fresh from school – is adopting ADF as their primary development framework and churning out new applications in enterprises and government organizations around the world. The advance guard of ADF developers, most of them member of the ADF Enterprise Methodology Group, will convene on Sunday September 30th, on the opening day of Oracle Open World 2012. From 9 AM until 4 PM, Moscone South room 305 will be center of the ADF Universe. Expect every one – from Oracle product manager and ADF engineer, ACE and ACE Director, ADF Developer and Architect – to be there, to share experiences, envision the future and teach each other tricks and insights.

Dinsdag 18 september: Oracle Open World & JavaOne 2012 Preview mini-conferenties – 12 presentaties op 1 avond

Van 30 september tot 5 oktober is San Francisco weer het domein van tegen de 45.000 deelnemers aan de Oracle Open World en JavaOne conferenties. Ruim 2000 presentaties worden daar gehouden, in vele tientallen zalen in hotels en het Moscone Conferentie Center in downtown San Francisco, waaronder pakweg 20 door Nederlandse sprekers. Hoewel honderden Nederlandse bezoekers op deze conferentie aanwezig zullen zijn, zijn er natuurlijk ook veel ‘thuisblijvers’. Om deze groep (en iedereen die wel gaat) toch of alvast een voorproefje te geven, organiseert AMIS voor de vijfde keer de Preview sessie voor Oracle Open World en JavaOne – een avond waarop Nederlandse sprekers met een OOW en/of JavaOne verleden, heden of toekomst een presentatie houden, bijvoorbeeld als generale repetitie voor hun optreden in San Francisco.

Deze sessie is gratis toegankelijk. Aanmelden kan via de AMIS website: Preview Oracle Open World en JavaOne 2012. De deuren gaan open op dinsdag 18 september om 16.30, om 18.00 uur is er een maaltijd en rond 21.00 uur eindigen de laatste vier sprekers en openen we de bar.

Multiple production versions through WebLogic production redeployment

Production redeployment is a facility in WebLogic that provides the ability to temporarily have multiple versions of the same web application of web service active at the same time.  

Sometimes, changes in application functionality require redeployment of the application. In the theoretical case of instantaneous responses from applications, we could argue that the roll out of a new version of an application is akin to the flip-of-the-switch: request A is handled by version X, the switch is flipped to bring version X+1 live and the next request B is taken care of by the new version. This, however, is not the reality. Requests take longer to process than no time at all. Besides, requests live in the context of a session – this applies to database as well as application server. This means that replacing version X with a new version X+1 in a throw-the-switch manner would not only potentially interrupt pending non-zero duration requests but would also – and far more harmfully – destroy all pending sessions. This would definitely not constitute zero-downtime application upgrade.

Most aggravating developer induced headaches for Middleware Administrators

In recent months, I have had a lot of dealings with middleware administrators, responsible for the management of WebLogic Server and other Fusion Middleware components such as SOA Suite, Oracle Service Bus, WebCenter and UCM. My role is frequently one that allows me to step back a little and observe. These observations made it very clear that not only is middleware administration a challenging task – one that is underestimated in many organizations – it is also one that is frequently made much harder than necessary by actions that developers take or do not take. Developers create the artifacts that administrators will deploy and manage on the middleware infrastructure. These developers can make life easier for the administrators if they adhere to certain best practices in creating and handing over these artifacts. However, out of ignorance, disinterest or lack of time it is unfortunately common for administrators to experience severe frustrations over the work of developers.
