OOW 2012 – The Big Stories

The show is over, the visitors are on their way home. The process of digesting the announcements, roadmaps and rumors – confirmed or not – can proceed in full swing. What has become of last year’s plans, what are this year’s plans (for next year and beyond) and what has materialized in terms of Oracle’s product portfolio. For everyone, the answers to these questions and the conclusions will be somewhat different – depending on focus, expectations and requirements. However, some conclusions will be shared by most who attended Oracle Open World 2012.

Without a doubt, some of the important themes were and will be: cloud – and at respectable distance – the next generation of database technology (12c) and of engineered systems (Exa… X3-v2), of mobile availability of both standard applications (Fusion Applications and other Oracle Applications products) and custom Portals and applications  (through ADF Mobile on iOS and Android)

OOW 2012: Questions to get answered during this conference

The show of the year is around the corner: on Sunday it will all start again, the Oracle Open World conference. Tens of thousands of developers, architects, administrators, project managers, decision makers and others involved with Oracle products one way or another are gathering in and around San Francisco. AMIS will attend with an 8 person team. We will present, network, publish and investigate. As much as we bring our knowledge and experience to the conference, we also want to find out many things. A quick list of some of the questions that are on the top of my head to get answered during thus year’s conference:

Cloud

After last year’s announcements, we have not really seen any concrete cloud instances from Oracle. I hope to learn during this conference where exactly we stand and are headed with the Oracle Cloud – both the Application and the Platform Services. Dinsdag 18 september: Oracle Open World & JavaOne 2012 Preview mini-conferenties – 12 presentaties op 1 avond

Van 30 september tot 5 oktober is San Francisco weer het domein van tegen de 45.000 deelnemers aan de Oracle Open World en JavaOne conferenties. Ruim 2000 presentaties worden daar gehouden, in vele tientallen zalen in hotels en het Moscone Conferentie Center in downtown San Francisco, waaronder pakweg 20 door Nederlandse sprekers. Hoewel honderden Nederlandse bezoekers op deze conferentie aanwezig zullen zijn, zijn er natuurlijk ook veel ‘thuisblijvers’. Om deze groep (en iedereen die wel gaat) toch of alvast een voorproefje te geven, organiseert AMIS voor de vijfde keer de Preview sessie voor Oracle Open World en JavaOne – een avond waarop Nederlandse sprekers met een OOW en/of JavaOne verleden, heden of toekomst een presentatie houden, bijvoorbeeld als generale repetitie voor hun optreden in San Francisco.

Deze sessie is gratis toegankelijk. Aanmelden kan via de AMIS website: Preview Oracle Open World en JavaOne 2012. De deuren gaan open op dinsdag 18 september om 16.30, om 18.00 uur is er een maaltijd en rond 21.00 uur eindigen de laatste vier sprekers en openen we de bar.

Report from Oracle Open World – op maandag 17 oktober, 17.00 uur bij AMIS in Nieuwegein

Het zal je niet zijn ontgaan dat vorige week in San Francisco Oracle Open World woedde. In een krappe week legde Oracle voor zo’n 45.000 bezoekers de strategie neer, de roadmap voor tientallen productlijnen en ook een serie nieuwe aankondigingen. De meest opvallende lanceringen: de Oracle Public Cloud, de Oracle NoSQL database en Big Data Applicance, de Exalytics machine voor BI ‘at the speed of thought’, de algemene beschikbaarheid van Fusion Applications en Oracle Social Networking.

AMIS was met zeven medewerkers aanwezig op Oracle Open World – om sessies te bezoeken, presentaties te geven, met productmanagement te overleggen, nieuwe producten te bekijken, op de demo grounds met productontwikkelaars te spreken, ervaringen uit te wisselen met peers van over de hele wereld… enzovoort.

Op Maandag 17 oktober verzorgt deze AMIS equipe een presentatie waarin de belangrijkste bevindingen vanaf de conferenties worden gedeeld. Bijvoorbeeld: wat wil Oracle met die Public Cloud? Database Transaction Recorder – Adding Who to When and What to make Flashback take over from Journalling tables

In previous articles, I have suggested that the arrival of the Flashback Data Archive in Oracle RDBMS 11g allowed us to finally say goodbye to journalling tables. Keeping track of all changes and previous states of our records in our own dedicated tables is no longer required, was my statement (for example in http://technology.amis.nl/blog/2453/oracle-11g-total-recall-flashback-in-the-hands-of-database-designers-and-application-developers-at-last-and-the-end-of-journalling-tables). Not only would using Flashback Data Archives require less programming, it improves performance for DML operations substantially and also provides a lot of functionality at our fingertips, as Flashback Queries easily incorporate historical records in straightforward SQL queries and using dbms_flashback we can even turn back time and regard all data as it was back then, using the same application and all the same queries.
