Oracle Tuxedo… A renewed acquaintance
Oct 27th
Years ago, when I worked as an Application Support Analyst for a big triple-A Bank, I got acquainted with the BEA product stack.
One of those products was BEA Tuxedo, at that time at the release of 6. I worked at a settlements project, and Tuxedo was used for as distributed transaction processing, to process settlements an clearing messageg from the bank to an international Clearing an Settlements Project, called CLS. It used the SWIFT network to connect; CLS was an international and timezone independent settlements and clearance platform to overcome timezone and bankrupt issues, and prevent a domino effect when an important bank in the chain becomes bankrupt.
Tuxedo is a transaction processing system or transaction-oriented middleware, or enterprise application server for a variety of systems and programming languages.
Tuxedo was designed for high availability and to provide scalable applications to support a lot transactions per second on commonly available distributed systems. It was developed and designed by AT&T if that required online transaction processing (OLTP) capabilities.
Tuxedo is a message routing and queuing system. Requests are sent to named services and Tuxedo uses memory based inter-process communication facilities to queue the requests to servers. The requester is unaware of where the server that actually processes the request is located or how it is implemented. In fact, Tuxedo was already implementing the SOA, in the early days before even the concept of SOA was familiair to any one.
Oracle acquired it in 2008, along with all other products from the BEA stack. I was really curious how Oracle would position this product, but during Oracle OpenWorld 2011 it became clear to me.
Oracle Tuxedo 12c will be part of the new Exabus stack, a component embedded in the Exalogic solution Oracle launched some earlier.
In this picture, you can see the position of the Exabus stack and in particular Tuxedo:
AMIS@OOW
Oct 7th
Yesterday evening we had our annual Oracle Open World review at our office in Nieuwegein. Around eighty people attended and all were very involved with the session. Five AMIS employees were at Oracle Open World, and each one covered one area of interest.
Before dinner Lucas gave an overview of the trends and topics that were covered at Oracle Open World. Just to convey the sheer size of OOW, Peter illustrated this by facts (number of people attending, number of lunches served, etc) as well as by photos. I’m still very impressed that they covered a four lane street (Howard street) by a tent, just to serve lunch… amazing.
Marco and myself gave an overview of what AMIS was doing at OOW, as well as the Oracle ACE Directors briefing right before OOW started.
There were a number of goodies that we took from Oracle Open World to give away this evening. We decided to do it a little different this year, we organized a BuzzWord Bingo. Each of the attendees was given a bingo sheet with some of the buzzwords that would be covered during our presentations.
Before we went for dinner six people had bingo and got their goodies to take home.
This time we had a Mexican Style dinner, very lovely. Lots of discussion of the topics and trends covered in the first part of the evening.
After dinner the more technical details where covered. Starting with Marco who covered the new hardware as well as Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. Then it was my turn to tell about the Oracle Database, SQL Developer, SQL Developer Datamodeler and APEX.
Peter talked about the SOA Suite and Fusion Middleware. Aino had the last slot, and covered JavaOne.
Around 21:15 (9:15 PM) all session had finished, and the bar “Cafe@AMIS” was opened. About an hour later it was time to call it a night. All in all a very succesful, very informative evening.
Thank you all for coming to our “show” and hopefully we’ll do the same for Oracle Open World 2011.

What questions to get answered at Oracle Open World 2010
Sep 17th
The sun is setting in Redwood Shores. The sky is red; the Oracle HQ towers are silhouetted against this dramatic red backdrop. Red, the color San Francisco is about to take on for the Oracle Open World conference.
We are at the end of the first day of the two-day ACE Director product briefing. This is a gathering of the ACE Directors – a fairly select group of experts and community representatives in various areas of Oracle’s product portfolio, including Database, Fusion Middleware, Oracle Applications and various development tools. On the eve of OOW 2010, we get briefed on the strategy for key Oracle products and technologies. A week of announcements and road map presentations has been condensed into two full days. A great opportunity to also plan for the rest of the conference – to learn more about the most interesting announcements of today and tomorrow.
Before today, I had a number of questions on Oracle plans, that I hope to get answered during the conference. These questions are almost like a guide through the conference program and sessions like today’s briefing. Below, I list some of the questions I would like to dive into during this OOW conference, as this will help me plan my next moves and help my customers with their future plans and timelines. Answers to these questions are likely to be discussed on this blog over the new few days and weeks.
AMIS Query – Preview Session Oracle Open World 2008
Aug 25th
We try to do our best, so some extra practice never hurts. If we think such an event or session can be interesting for our Dutch peers, we call it an AMIS Query. An AMIS Query is an in house event; one or more presentations from our AMIS colleagues or outside specialists from other companies. Everyone can attend and AMIS Query, at least, as long as we can logistically can manage it. Drinks and a dinner are provided during these sessions.
We asked the other Dutch Oracle Open World presenters if they also were interested in such an event and this resulted in the following impressive list:
- Steven Davelaar, Oracle Consulting, Nederland – Oracle JHeadstart R11: Unprecedented Productivity in Developing Best-Practice Fusion Web Applications
- Douwe Pieter van den Bos, Caesar Groep B.V., Technology Manager - Designer2APEX: Migrate Your Forms UIs to Oracle Application Express
- Roel Hartman, Logica – Developing a Real-World Logistic Application with Oracle Application Express
- Ronald van Luttikhuizen en Lonneke Dikmans, Approach Alliance - BEA AquaLogic Versus Oracle Fusion Middleware Shootout
- John Copier, IT-Eye – ESB Central: Applying SOA to Master Data Management in the Dutch Public Sector
- Lucas Jellema, AMIS – Optimal Use of Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Database 11g for Modern Application Development
- Peter Ebell & Lucas Jellema, AMIS – Did We Spoil the End User? Building Personalization into JavaServer Faces Technology-Based Applications
- Gerwin Hendriksen, AMIS – Jumping The GAPP
- Marco Gralike, AMIS – Real World Experience with Oracle XML Database 11g: An Oracle ACE’s Perspective
- Marco Gralike, AMIS – XMLDB: Building Blocks and Best Practices
- Frits Hoogland, Interaccess – Automatic Storage Management
We are still hoping for some extra presentations / presenters to be added on the list. Not everyone from the Dutch presenters could be reached yet, because of the holiday season. So expect one or two presentations to be added on this list. The presentations will be given in multiple session tracks, this because of the amount of participants and time restraints. If needed, we will cut down the AMIS presentations to a total of 3 sessions.
