ODTUG KScope 11 : A short overview of ADF on the Fusion Middleware track
Jul 25th
From June 26th to June 30th the KScope 11 conference was in Long Beach California. Nice setting for a great conference. It was the first time that KScope had a Fusion Middleware Track. For me it was a very busy conference with three presentations, handson workshops, live demonstrations and a Boff session with the EMG. In this post some of my highlights. Kaleidoscope 2011: Sunday’s Symposium
Jun 27th
Sunday’s Conference day started very early at around 07:30 by going straight to registration, then on to a quick breakfast and the first session at 08:30 AM. Joel Kallman of the APEX Development team started my round of that morning by explaining all the tools and processes which are used / were used by the APEX Development teams that is located more or less around a huge amount of different places in the US, Europe and India. Not even to mention al the supporting people on topics like security, creating manuals, testing, supporting etc, etc. Fun to see that the team uses tools like Hudson, Subversion and Oracle’s conference tooling to be able to work wherever you as a team member are located.
Using the ADF DVT Radar Graph for comparing series – further analyzing ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2011 Session Schedule
Jun 22nd
I have always had a fascination for the Data Visualization capabilities of all the tools and technologies I have worked with. For example: I worked with Oracle Graphics 2.0, back in 1994, and liked it! Fast forwarding through the years – I am now wetting my appetite with ADF’s Data Visualization Tags (DVT) – an impressive array of graphs, gauges, charts and other ways of visualizing data.
One interesting type of graph that I have not actually used before, is the Radar Chart. It is an interesting type of visualization that can plot in one graph values for multiple series against multiple dimensions and make it easy to compare them (the series) with one another. Granted, you can do something similar with a multi-series line chart, yet the comparison is somewhat more pronounced in the radar graph.
See for example the next graph. It plots values for three series – each serie represents a region in the world. For each of the tracks at the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2011 conference, the percentage of sessions in the track delivered by presenters from the region represented by a serie is plotted. Thus we can see that over 90% of the sessions in the BI and Oracle EPM track is delivered by presenters from the AMERICAS. The Fusion Middleware track has a completely different region-contribution pattern: over 60% of sessions in that track is from EMEA with only a little over 30% coming from the AMERICAS. The relative contributions from the AMERICAS and EMEA for the tracks APEX and Database Development seem fairly similar – both around 30% EMEA can close to 70% from the AMERICAS. The role of APAC is only fairly small at this conference – only contributing to the Fusion Middleware track.

Using ADF 11gR2 DVT component Pivot Table for an on-line analysis of the ODTUG Kaleidoscope session catalog
Jun 20th
ADF comes with a rich collection of component that allow us to visualize and analyze data in ways that previously were only available in fancy OLAP and other BI tools. Now, our own custom developed ADF applications can offer those same fancy capabilities using ADF DVT. Note that Oracle’s BI tools – such as OBI EE – make use of those same components.
This article demonstrates the use of the Pivot Table component – as it is currently shipped in ADF 11gR2. This component presents data in initially very condensed, highly aggregated form and allows the user to ’slice and dice’ and drill down and aggregate along various dimensions.
The Pivot Table is used in this case to analyze the data for the sessions scheduled for the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2011 conference, later this month, in Long Beach, California. The article will demonstrate that just a few, declarative steps and about 10 minutes of your time are quite enough to include rich analytical capabilities in an ADF application.
The initial Pivot Table shown to the user looks as follows:

Leveraging APEX in XE 11gR2 to rapidly load Excel data into a database table
Jun 18th
Whilst preparing for the Thursday Thunder session at the last day of the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2011 conference in Long Beach, where an all star team of moderators and developers will present a live application development session with key components from Fusion Middleware, I came across a very useful feature of APEX, readily available in my local light weight Oracle XE Database 11gR2.
The Thursday Thunder session will create a portal for participants of a technology conference just like ODTUG Kaleidoscope itself. It will also create a back office application for the conference’s organizing team and it will model and implement a key business process addressing the submission, acceptance and delivery of presentations at the conference. This session has three moderators – Chris Muir, Lonneke Dikmans and Duncan Mills – and a development team of five – Edwin Biemond, Peter Ebell, Ronald van Luttikhuizen, Luc Bors and Steven Davelaar. In order to have a case that is as realistic as possible, I requested the ODTUG organizers for the actual data of this year’s conference – in terms of presenters, sessions and the planning of them all.
They were very helpful and almost instantly provided me with the requested data – in an Excel spreadsheet file. We need to have that data in a bunch of relational database tables. My challenge therefore was to import the data from the spreadsheet into the database. A couple of options are open to me – including an external table in the database, some custom code for reading the Excel file or its csv counterpart or I could make use of the APEX utility in the SQL Workshop component. I used the latter – and it worked like a charm.
PL/SQL (and APEX) highlight of the year: OPP Conference in Brussels, 27-28th October
Oct 13th
PL/SQL Developer Tools Session Brussels (Belgium) will be the PL/SQL Hotspot of the world during the two-day OPP 2010 (ODTUG’s Oracle PL/SQL Programming) conference – that is co-located with the APEXposed 2010 conference. These two conferences offer a wonderful opportunity for both intermediate and advanced PL/SQL and APEX programmers to learn, get inspired and meet with fellow enthousiasts and peers from all over Europe. Many of the best known names – forum-gurus, authors of books, blogs and articles and presenters – gather in Brussels to share their experiences, their ventures into uncharted territory, their best practices and most of all, their passion for the technology. More information on these two conferences is found at: http://www.odtugopp.com/agendabrussels.html . Note: the early bird registration ends on October 15th, so hurry up to get the best deal!
On the program for the OPP conference: AMIS will contribute six presentations delivered by four different presenters (three of whom happen to be Oracle ACE Directors):
Patrick Barel:
PL/SQL Developer Tools Session
Marco Gralike:
XML Programming in PL/SQL (Part 1)
XML Programming in PL/SQL (Part 2)
Lucas Jellema:
SOA for PL/SQL Developers
Reaching Out from PL/SQL
Alex Nuijten:
Oracle11g: Edition-based Redefinition
Other well known names in the OPP agenda include among others PL/SQL’s top model Steven Feuerstein, Andrew Clarke and fellow Dutchmen Toon Koppelaars and Rob van Wijk.
See http://www.odtugopp.com/agendabrussels.html for the agenda of OPP. The agenda for APEXposed is here: http://www.odtugapextraining.com/agendabrussels.html.
ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009
Jul 13th
Recently I presented for the fourth time at the annual ODTUG Kaleidoscope conference. It’s really a great conference that I recommend to every Oracle consultant. It features great presentations, discussion forums, hands-on labs on a broad range of subjects ranging from Oracle Forms to ADF, SOA, Apex, Essbase, PL/SQL, methodology etc. etc. But it’s not only the sesssions, but also the fun and discussions during breakfast, lunch, diner and other social activities and it’s very easy to meet the experts in the field. This makes the Kaleidoscope one of the most valuable conferences.
