Hotsos 2010 – Presenters, Presentations, Presenting

I never find it very easy to try to capture the atmosphere during a conference, the presenting part, the presentations or the discussions, for example, you could have with the presenters. Hotsos is such a cool and unique event were you have the opportunity, to listen but also to interact. The amount of people that attend isn’t that big, only a few hundreds, but they share all the same passion, the passion to improve on performance, mostly Oracle related. It has only two tracks and its not uncommon that people present and than go afterwards to a presentation to listen in what the other presenter has to say.

Due to the fact that it is manageable in terms of choice, located on a convenient location and well organized, you have the opportunity to pick just the thing you like and most of the time not miss out on “the other” presentation you would have liked to see. Besides that people stay in (overnight in the Hotel), so discussions about the technology, the method or an example during a presentation will be discussed in far more detail than you normally would do, from presenter to presenter or from presenter to the guy that attended and vice versa. The fact that all have the passion for performance or that they realize that performance is a beast with various angles to approach, bounds, and every point, every question is one to be heard and/or discussed. On equal terms. If you have seen my video impressions of Hotsos in 2009, you get a bit of what I am trying to say.

Anyway, not being a native speaker and with my new “flip” at hand (Ultra HD), I just show you how much fun and interesting stuff is going on, probably this will do more right to those presentations than me trying to explain what all those new ideas which were that popped into my head during this years Hotsos Symposium…although…sometimes technology helps and sometimes it just doesn’t…or is it a VMware thing Doug…?

My agenda is not that much different then the one from Doug. The moment it is mentioning RAC related stuff, then I probably would have been attending the other guy.

The Monday started great with a small introduction of Tom Kyte’s generally unknown other qualities…

…Enjoy…

Advert: Oracle XMLDB Masterclass in Germany

Here a small advert for one of my events scheduled for this year. On the 24th of Februari I will be giving a Masterclass regarding Oracle XMLDB in Germany. To be precise in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The following will be addressed, but might you attend, then drop me a line (marco dot gralike at amis dot nl) regarding your specific topics and I will see if I can address it within the bounderies of the course setup):

  • Provide a holistic view of Oracle’s XML Database features
  • Provide an in-depth view on how XML should be handled in general and in the Oracle XML database
  • Provide realistic solutions, architectures, to make an XML environment work
  • Show how to avoid problems while working in an XML environment
  • Help to gain the optimum in performance and functionality from your XML database environment

The course is helpful for people who want to know more about Oracle XML DB and have some experience working with it, architects, dba or developers alike. I will see how good my German is during the day and if I feel very brave enough, switch to German during the course.

“Hotsos Revisited”, Revisited…

Lucas already gave a very good in depth overview of the "Hotsos Revisited" session last night. It always amazes me how fast he can make a cool blog post that  accurately points out the impressions we had of the evening. It started off with an idea we (Jeroen, Toon, Gerwin and me) had  of sharing some of the ideas, atmosphere and presentation info we got from the Hotsos Symposium this year. It is not an easy task to present the presenters accordingly trying to achieve some of the energy that shared during their presentations at Hotsos, also, of course, we were not that deep into the material they presented / as the people we tried to do credit to.

I am indebted  to Jeroen, Gerwin and Toon for making the time (their precious spare family time) too make it all happen. Even if it has to be all fun, you, as a presenter, don’t want to let the attendees, the audience, down by leaving them with the impression that such an evening was lost time. So it still takes a lot off effort to make it all work.

AMIS Query 18 May – Hotsos 2009 Revisited

The 8th of March 2009…The Oracle Performance Symposium in Irving, Texas, also known as the Hotsos Symposium was about to start… Four Dutch guys had the luck to attend this year: Jeroen Evers (Fameus), Toon Koppelaars (RuleGen), Gerwin Hendriksen (AMIS) en Marco Gralike (AMIS).

We wanted to share some of our Hotsos experiences, thoughts about, or revive some of the presentations we have seen this year. That’s how the idea for this AMIS Query started; Let’s share some of the lessons learned; Pass on some of the knowledge. We hope we can do justice regarding the topics we have seen and enjoyed during Hotsos.

Have a look at the agenda (Dutch) and attend this free (one time only) mini-revival of Hotsos 2009: Een Terugblik op Hotsos 2009

OGH Oracle Ace Cases with…Marco Gralike

An advert for myself. Wow! How cool is that…

The local Oracle User Group Holland starts on the 16th of April with a new series of presentations given this time by the Dutch Oracle ACE’s and Oracle ACE Directors under the compelling name "Oracle ACE Cases". They asked me to do the kick-off of the series… A whole evening with just me and "my" Oracle XMLDB. I felt honored, so I said yes, but was also surprised…

I still notice that "people" have problems regarding the "specialism" Oracle XMLDB. Is it development, dba stuff, an architecture, an appliance…? I was very proud to be able to present in 2007, for the first time, on a big symposium called UKOUG, although under the label "Fusion Technology". In 2008 I had the pleasure to be on the 25th anniversary of the UKOUG, this time I had to "compete" (if you make an attempt, why not grasp for the stars  ) in the same time slot with a Mr. Tom Kyte and a Mr. Jonathan Lewis and this time my XMLDB topic was relabeled as "Server Technology".

So the name of the game is changing and being a DBA, I think this correct for core functionality as Oracle XMLDB currently is, at least since the Oracle 11g database release. I also like approaching (performance, architectural, database, etc) problems via a holistic view on the world, something that appeals me in working with the Oracle XML database. A DBA perspective is not enough, you also have to grasp what the development colleagues are trying to achieve and, for example, how it hooks into the middle tier or its place in the business process.

A database never stands alone…

Anyway, if you want to hear my end off the story while trying to achieve (ahum, my attempt that is…) too present like only a Cary Millsap can, with a twist of James Morle’s humor, register yourself for this Dutch event on the 16th (presented in Dutch). Hopefully a good kick-off to a very interesting series of Dutch Oracle Ace Cases.

PS: …if not…and you are at this years Hotsos Symposium (Dallas), I will be the guy who is listening with awe and great respect to Mr. Chris Date’s presentation and a nickname tag with the text "XML Just Rocks…" (living up to my addictions)
