RichFaces plugin for NetBeans updated
Apr 12th
About a year ago, during JavaOne 2008, Geertjan Wielenga and I created NetBeans modules for JBoss RichFaces support. Last week we updated the modules so now version 3.3.0.GA of RichFaces is supported. I updated the components palette with the newest a4j and rich tags. Geertjan introduced some new images for the palette entries, which now look like this
Even better, Geertjan produced a quick start turorial. Check out Geertjans weblog article for where to download the modules.
ADF Faces RC – Highlight partially refreshed areas to enlighten the user about automatic updates
Apr 6th
One of the rich aspects of ADF Faces RC (and most Web 2.0/AJAX components) is functionality that performs Partial Page Refresh operations: actions by the user trigger asynchronous communication between browser and server that in turn may cause selected areas of the page to be refreshed. For example: entering a value may lead to a refresh of a derived value or a conversion of the entered value. Sometimes a single user action lead to refresh of multiple items and areas on the page. On other occasions, server push may cause items or page areas to be refreshed.
Without additional effort, these partial updates are subtle. They just happen. When the changes are small, the user will probably not notice the refresh taking place. He/she may see the new value, wondering where that came from. And that may be just fine. However, it could also be we like to make it clear to the user that and when items and areas have been refreshed. For example by highlighting the item or region in question immediately after the refresh takes place and having the highlight effect slowly fade away.
It turns out to be fairly easy to implement such a ‘highlight after partial refresh with fade away’ effect. This article demonstrates a straightforward example of that behavior.
SQL Inside Out – Challenging Puzzles and Puzzling Challenges – Seminar 22nd April, Sweden
Apr 5th
April is the month of the presentations and seminars for me (May and June too by the way). On Wednesday April 22nd, I will be presenting a seminar in Sweden (in Kista, near Stockolm), titled: SQL Inside Out – Challenging Puzzles and Puzzling Challenges. It is an interesting journey through some of the most important, useful and funful parts of SQL. In 8 sections, we travel through time, spend time on the couch, enjoin ourselves and use procedural SQL after some networking with a super model (Exsqel) and other odd types in weird collections. Many of the puzzles we discuss are based on real world challenges I had to deal with over the past few years. Time and again it proved that Oracle SQL provides so much functionality that through SQL alone some tough nuts could be cracked.
This seminar allows experienced SQL developers to learn about many useful options, features and facilities in Oracle SQL that will take them beyond the queries they are writing today – more powerful, more elegant and more maintainable.
For more information or to register for this seminar, please go to the website of Oracle University. Note that the AMIS Technology School also offers this seminar, both in our premises in Nieuwegein and on your site if so desired (email: technologyschool@amis.nl).
ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2009 – focus on SOA and BPM in dedicated symposium and track
Apr 1st
Monterey is the more than appealing location for this year’s ODTUG Kaleidoscope conference (21-25 June). And SOA & BPM is one of the equally attractive focus areas. In the SOA & BPM symposium on Sunday, one of the greatest assemblies of Oracle SOA experts will gather for a day full of experience exchange, future outlook and brainstorming on new technology and new concepts. We will discuss the steps to take for a successful SOA implementation as well as best practices for applying Oracle’s SOA technology. New trends and influences as well as the convergence of SOA, BPM, EDA and other architectural concepts and methodological approaches are topics for exchange of views, ideas and real world findings. We will also take a closer look at the near future: Oracle’s SOA Suite release 11g as well as some of the closely aligned products like WebCenter 11g, the Governance products and the BPM suite.
During the conference proper – starting on Monday 22th June and running through Thursday 25th June – SOA & BPM will be one of the tracks , that will bring around 20 presentations from Oracle ACEs and ACE Directors and other experts on Oracle SOA & BPM technology. These presentations will discuss a large number of interesting topics, ranging from Complex Event Processing and the value of a Canonical Model at the heart of your SOA implementation to the SCA concepts underpinning the Oracle 11g SOA Suite, implementing SOA in a database centric environment and desigining & implementing workflow driven business processes in a SOA infrastructure.
Of course the ODTUG Kaleidoscope has much more to offer besides these SOA & BPM presentations; anyone interested (also) in ADF, APEX, SQL & PL/SQL development, Oracle Forms & Designer as well as Hyperion/Essbase or classic Oracle BI and DBA related topics should come and participate. Not just by attending presentations but also by entering in the discussions and lively exchange of experiences and opinions.
I have attended the ODTUG conference every year since 1997 and it is a yearly treat. The conference is great in terms of the people that attend, the layout of the conference, the opportunities for sharing frustrations, solutions, obsessions, passions and experiences and of course the usually pretty good presentations. I know no conference where speakers and attendees (and this year over 40 Oracle ACEs and ACE Directors) mingle so freely, from breakfast to dinner and later. It is strictly content, hardly any marketing fluff. The small scale allows for real interaction between attendees. All in all – I can really recommend this special conference.
