The Golden Hammer – Dutch Oracle User Group Session on JDeveloper 11g Technology Preview 3
Apr 24th
Last Thursday, I did a presentation during the Dutch Oracle User Group event on JDeveloper 11g TP3. I sort of made fun of ourselves: the title of the event suggest we were like a bunch or carpenters coming together to discuss a new type of hammer that is not yet available and
whose benefits we will discuss. Of course the really important topics are the trends in application development and deployment, application architecture and the user-application interaction patterns. The presentation I did – following Hugo Brandt (Oracle) and Edwin Biemond (Ordina) focused on those broader concepts. I discussed Web 2.0 and Social Networking, SaaS, Event Driven Architecture and a number of other trends that will influence the way we develop applications in the near future – and of course the way in which JDeveloper 11g will help us with that.

GlassFish and AMIS present: GlassFish and OpenESB
Apr 24th
In March 2006, NL-JUG (the Netherlands Java Users Group) and Sun Microsystems
organized a University Session about GlassFish. Now, two years later, GlassFish
has evolved into much more than just an Open Source application server for Java
EE5. Using add-ons like OpenSSO, Hudson, Metro and OpenESB, GlassFish becomes a
robust and highly scalable application server for Java EE5, continuous
integration, SOA and BPEL.

Agile software development, the principles. Principle 6: The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
This is the sixth of 12 posts about the principles of agile software development. Purpose is to go back to the start of the agile manifesto (http://agilemanifesto.org/principles.html) and discuss the implementation of the 12 principles in real life software engineering. Goals of agility are to go deliver software of higher quality, faster, with a higher acceptance to end-users and able to follow the changing business requirements to strive for competitive advantage.
The question is: is this going to work in practice or is this only based on a nice marketing and sales story.
Principle 6: The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
The purpose of conversation/communication is to transfer a message form the sender to the recipient. In projects, conversation is either about the project process (plans, risk, approach etc) or project content (requirements). Getting your team members to understand the right information correctly is the key factor in the projects success. Being effective in this transference of information is crucial to save time and overcome misunderstanding, especially in agile projects. Face-to-face communication is in fact the most effective way of communicating your project.
Driving a 100km for a 1 hour meeting is much more effective than several teleconference meetings. Despite the technological advanced means of communication (IM, WebMeeting, Video Conferencing) there is nothing more effective than face-to-face contact. Read the rest of this entry »
ODTUG 2008 – Sneak Preview van de Nederlandse inzendingen
Apr 21st

Did we spoil the end user? Building Customization and Personalization into JSF applications (NLJUG-JSpring)
Apr 18th
The other day I did a presentation during the Dutch Java User Group conference (NLJUG) in Bussum. In a way this was a trial run for the presentation with the same title and largely same content colleague Peter Ebell and myself will be doing during JavaOne 2008 in a few weeks time (a BOF session). It went well – I finished just in time (which for me is an achievement) and I believe I was able to deliver my key messages.

Collaborate 08 – Day 4 – The Final Day
Apr 18th
Being the last day of the conference
there was a shorter program, only until early afternoon.
I must say, this has been a very
valuable conference for me. I have seen great presentations, received
very valuable information on current and future products of Oracle
and, not the least important, I met some great people.
Today I attended two sessions:
-
RAC on E-Business Suite –
Sweating the details – by Kurt Forshee, DCC Services, LLC -

Collaborate 08 – Day 3
Apr 17th
I am supposed to be at a party tonight,
but I am too exhausted, to be honest to go out and my head is too
full with all kinds of new stuff… (poor me!;-)
Today was another day of very
interesting stuff, even though a couple of presentations covered
things already covered in earlier presentations. For example, AIA is
all over the place here. You cannot attend almost any presentation
about E-Business Suite or SOA that doesn’t have at least a number of
slides dealing with the subject. That doesn’t make things less
interesting though, because AIA is the future for any company dealing
with multiple Oracel Applications; not necessarily being Oracle
E-Business Suite, that is. That brings me to something that I find
confusing sometimes, especially at a conference like this. Oracle
E-Business Suite is often referred to as Oracle Applications, but
Oracle Applications are also referred to as
the complete suite of Oracle applications, like Oracle E-Business
Suite, PeopleSoft, Siebel, JDEdwards and so on. These are all Oracle
“Applications”. Therefore, I mostly prefer Oracle E-Business
Suite rather than Oracle Applications. But that aside.
The presentations that I saw today:
-
E-Business Suite Release 12
Upgrade: Quick, Good and Inexpensive…No kidding! – by Michael
Barone and Bill Dunham, OATC -
Taking AIA to the next level using
Fusion Middleware – Markus Zirn, Oracle -
The OAUG Annual Meeting Of The
Members – Jan Wagner, NATO a.o. -
Get Ready For E-Business Suite
Release 12 – Sandra Vucinic, VLAD Group -
Fusion Council Panel – John
Stouffer a.o.
