Live from the opening session of JavaOne 2007

Note: this is a live blog that will be updated regularly over the next two hours. I am writing it as we are in Moscone South Conference Hall for the keynote session.

First speaker: John Gage – Chief Researcher and Director of Science Office, opening the 12th JavaOne, 81 hours of Java bliss.

Some guidelines. Rule 1: do not be shy. Do not focus on what and who you know.

Why are we here: key theme: Internet connected multi function device
Open Sourcing of java: bring down cost of Java powered devices.
Solar cell 165 mW – one hour of Sun, ten minutes of talk. Distributed power generation.

Forget nationality, forget polite and reserved. Everyone is Brazilian for the next 81 hours. In every session, introduce yourself to somebody and talk about what you do. Grasp the opportunity for cross fertilization. Do not sit with your friends.

This conference is to be carbon neutral. A lot tougher than we thought. Including flushing, elevators, cooking food, people flying in here etc. Next year refine the accounting system. Currently carbon rights can be bought at $3,25, which is an order of magnitude off.
Java to the person, one to one, small devices internet connected.

motto: Be Open – Open Possibilities

Next speaker: Rich Green – executive vice president: “It’s big, it’s soooo coooool. New announcements, new programs.”

The network is an unstoppable force. Last year 250 Million people joined netwerk through GSM. People need to communicate, Communication devices outsell PCs and laptops 20 to 1. Some other numbers: 6M Java Developers (+ 20%), 5.5B devices (2B mobile Java powered handsets), 11M televisions.

In the works: Glassfish V2 (reference, product, open source). Scripting support (JRuby), innovative multimedia services for enterprise and next gen networks (IMS). Available on OSX, SOlaris, Windows, Linux.

(Glassfish is to Sun what Geronimo is to IBM?)

Martin Harriman – Ericsson – VP Marketing & Business Development, Multimedia

Announcement: develop ecosystem around IMS in open source
Sun Java System Communications Application Server

RTS – Real Time Java
The ability to build real time application is now available to all of us – gaming, real time business software, real time technology. Anna Ewing CIO Nasdaq. NASDAQ trading technology runs on Java. Highly mission critical. More transaction per day than next to US equity exchanges combined. Roughly 5 bilion shares traded per day in the US; on peak times that number can apply to Nasdaq alone. # transactions/s: 150.378. 400M transactions per day. Submilisecond speed. Respond to unexecpted events with predictability.

Time for real time. Prototyping next generation of infrastructure on RTJ.

Java is Digital Entertainment

Blu-ray player brings Java into the living room. Opportunity to create new content, communicate with a lot of consumers. Tom Hallman, VP President of Production Operations, Digital Authoring Center. Java is part of the Blu-Ray specification. Menus, all scrolling, images etc. on Blu-Ray programmed with Java. On line connectivity for Blu-Ray devices. BDJ technology for Blu-Ray authoring??

NetBeans 6.0 available shortly. User count is up with 92%. JRuby, JavaScript support. GUI builder for desktop. New editor. Modular packs for mobility, C/C++, Web and more. Premier platform for developing mobile applications.

Announcement: OpenJDK

November 2006: open source Java., today the completion of that task. OpenJDK open source buildable Java Debelopment Kit. Easy open JDK contribution through NetBeans. Also availble the TCK – compatibility certification kit. OpenJDK Interim Governing Board for having the community governing itself. Five individuals, two from SUN. Big round of applause.

Open equals Opportunity

What’s next? After reaching all of you, it is time to reach out to the rest of humanity. Big steps, big announcements:
– faster, faster download, more rapid execution speed. Over the next few months several releases of J2SE 6: faster, faster, faster.
– wouldn’t it be cool – since the platform is everywhere – to add new level of focus

Businesses want to connect to people. The way to do that is through devices. Mobile devices are and will increasingly be the primary means of connecting to the internet: not PCs and Laptops. Surprised at impact of open sourcing Java, and the license chosen for doing that. Governments around the world like the license used for open sourcing Java.

Unacceptable that 1,5 billion go to bed hungry tonight. We need to train the young, create jobs and deal with the treatment of gender: no country treats its women as it does its men.
